In support of World First Aid Day on 14 September, Red Cross Training hosted a LinkedIn Live event featuring the impact of hybrid working in terms of training additional employees in first aid. Alice Squires, Training Product Manager at Red Cross Training also discussed the requirement for lone workers to be trained in first aid, along with a demonstration of the key first aid skills required for a few of the common injuries that may occur whilst working from home.

Watch what happened at our World First Aid Day LinkedIn Live event.

Prior to the event, followers of the British Red Cross LinkedIn channel were asked if they had had a first aid emergency whilst working remotely. 22% of followers that responded, said that they had a first aid emergency whilst working remotely. 27% had a cut, 15% had a burn, 38% had a sprain or strain, caused by a slip or fall and 20% had a head injury (bump to the head).

The event highlighted:

  • The need to revisit your first aid needs assessment if you have moved to a hybrid working model.
  • Additional first aiders and a rota system can ensure sufficient numbers of first aiders are onsite at all times.
  • Lone workers can face unique safety challenges and increased risks and so it’s important to provide the right support in case of an emergency.
  • Lone workers should have access to a first aid kit, phone and any equipment used should be safe and unlikely to cause injury.

Following the live event, Alice Squires said: "It's always a pleasure to share key first skills with our LinkedIn followers, especially as it’s not unusual for employees to spend some time working remotely and some time in a centralised office location. Our LinkedIn Live offered the opportunity for viewers to hear answers to some key questions around the impact of hybrid working, in terms of training additional employees in first aid and the requirement for lone workers to be trained in first aid. It's always a good idea to periodically review policies especially if working practices change.’’

British Red Cross Training offers a wide range of health and safety and first aid training courses to help prevent workplace accidents from occurring and build the skillset to help in those crucial moments when emergency strikes, whatever your organisation’s requirements.
